In my last article, we explored the different kinds of nuts that we have at our disposal and we got to know what a nutrient powerhouse nuts really are.

The good news is there are so many ways one can include these nutritious treats into their daily dietary intake. Here are some tips:

Roast nuts for breakfast:

Roasting peanuts, whether using an oven, jiko, gas cooker or any other way, is the most common way people enjoy their peanuts in Kenya. These roasted treats can make a very good breakfast accompaniment that will serve to boost morning nutrition as well as energy levels. Chew roasted peanuts or sprinkle them on your veggie sandwich.

Nuts in porridge:

If your child is a fan of nuts, you might also want to try sprinkling nut crumbs in their porridge. These are best when roasted of course. Use a grinder to create the crumbs and sprinkle them into a cup of porridge.

This is bound to give the porridge a new flavor and even make it more interesting. Ensure the crumbs are fine enough to prevent chocking incidences.

Nuts in pastry:

No one said mandazis and chapatis can only be made interesting using carrots and pumpkins alone. Use nuts crumbs to enrich the snacks you make in your home, whether it is for the kids, for the greater household or as treats for your visitors. You can also make banana or sweet potato fritters with roasted peanut crumbs.

Nuts in smoothies:

Blend yogurt, ice cream and some almonds to make a super nutritious smoothie. You can also choose to blend components of your favourite smoothie then just sprinkle nut crumbs on top and swirl with a fork; makes a tasty treat!
