Despite all the information available, most of us are either oblivious or just choose to be ignorant of what the foods we eat contain hence the importance of reading labels and knowing how the food you and your family eat is being prepared and packaged. To keep foods in the shelf longer and appeal to the buyer’s eyes over 3,000 food additives, flavorings, colors, preservatives and other ingredients are used.

This combined with processing the food alters the composition of food from its natural state into something else. The result of these chemical filled foods wreak havoc on our metabolism and general health.

Before you get sucked into spending your hard earned money on these toxic foods, be on the lookout for these five dangerous ingredients that have been found to even cause cancer.


  1. Preservatives

Most preservatives that preserve food longer have been linked to a myriad of health issues from allergies to cancer. Studies have shown that the two most used preservatives; butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are reasonably anticipated human carcinogens. These two have also been associated with damaging effects on the brain’s neurological system and altering behavior.

  1. Artificial sweeteners

If you thought sugar was the worst out there, be prepared to be shocked. Artificial sweeteners like saccharin, aspartame and sucralose are believed to be more damaging to the metabolism than plain sugar. Not only have they been linked to diabetes type 2, obesity and other health problems, but aspartame has been banned in several countries due to studies showing strong links to cancer.

  1. High Fructose Corn Syrup

HFCS is a highly processed and refined sugar extracted from corn that is found in literally every sweet snack you can think of. From chocolate, sweets, soda you name it. This has been linked to diabetes, obesity and metabolic problems.

  1. Trans fats and hydrogenated oils

Many restaurants and hotels use trans fats to deep fry foods because they can be used over and over. Due to how easy it is to create and inexpensive, manufacturers make trans fats through an industrial process of adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oil. According to researchers this is considered one of the worst oils to ingest because unlike fats, trans fat raises your LDL or bad cholesterol and lowers HDL or good cholesterol. Regular consumption has been associated with numerous health problems from heart conditions, cancer risk and Alzheimer’s disease.

  1. Artificial colors

Eating foods with artificial colors is asking for trouble. Most manufacturers continue to use these colors despite health concerns. For instance, colors blue, green and yellow have been associated with kidney, thyroid, bladder, adrenal and brain cancer. They are considered to be potentially harmful to children as well. Numerous studies of Yellow No. 5 used in many junk foods revealed that it caused genotoxicity. This is deterioration of a cell’s genetic material with potential to mutate healthy DNA according to the book titled ‘Rich Food, Poor Food.’
