Ingredient of the week: Granulated sugar
Sugar is one of the key ingredients in cake baking seeing that cakes are a sweet food. On some recipes, you will find the ingredients list calling for ‘granulated sugar’. This is simply refined sugar used to sweeten our beverages every day. In countries like the US, Australia, and the United Kingdom, people know it as ‘granulated sugar.’ In Kenya it is white sugar because it has all the molasses refined out of it compared to brown sugar.
Simple cake recipe: Pre-heat oven, prepare baking tins or cake shapers, sieve and combine flour, baking powder and salt (dry ingredients) in a bowl, beat eggs, vanilla extract, sugar and butter (wet ingredients) in a different bowl, fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mix until smooth. Pour into prepared baking tins, put into the oven, bake until cooked (45 minutes to an hour depending on your recipe of choice). Using a toothpick, poke the centre of the cake to check if it’s done. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready. If not, bake your cake for a few minutes more then poke again in a different spot with a different toothpick.
