Dark circles under your eyes aren't just about being tired - they say something about your health

Health

Nothing says "I'm tired" more than dark circles under the eyes - but it may not just be fatigue causing them

They're those tell-tale dark circles which say to the world "someone did NOT get enough shut-eye last night", and we most commonly associate them with fatigue.

Whether you were up with a sleep-shunning baby, or simply dancing up a storm till the wee hours, most of us have had to laugh off "you look tired" comments the next day, as some eagle-eyed colleague or friend spies your eye-bags and shadows.

Yep, cheers guys.

However, if you find no matter how much sleep you get, or which lotions and potions you use, NOTHING seems to improve your dark circles, there are other explanations at hand.

And neither of them involve 'too many cheeky Jägerbombs / poor life decisions'.

1. Your dark circles COULD be allergies

According to specialists at The Mayo Clinic , any allergies you may have could be causing those pesky dark circles.

Do you have any allergies?

This is because of the nature of the skin under our eyes. It's a lot thinner than elsewhere, so there's a lot less fat or space to disguise the blood vessels which become dilated as a result of allergies.

"Allergic reactions can trigger your immune system to release these compounds called histamines, which cause blood vessels to dilate," reports the brains behind YouTube channel SciShow

Dust mites can provoke allergic reactions

"Plus, itching and rubbing your eyes can make the puffiness worse. So besides the dark circles from built-up blood and inflammation, puffy eye bags can also mean dark shadows."

How to get rid of dark circles under your eyes

Dark circles could also mean nasal congestion there are ways of combating congestion - and therefore dark circles

"One common cause is nasal congestion. When your nose gets congested, veins that usually drain from your eyes into your nose become widened and darker."

They go on to suggest, "rinsing your sinuses with a saltwater solution (mix 1/4 teaspoon sea salt with 2 cups warm water) or over-the-counter saline spray can help relieve nasal congestion and your dark circles."
