One of the first questions that pop up on once you get a new job is how to be successful at what you will be doing. Getting a new job can be scary from all the things you need to live up to from the interviews to making new friends.

You spend a good part of your week preparing and worrying about making that first good impression, how to be successful at your job and building a path to a promotion. If you find yourself in this position, here are ways you can prepare and succeed at your new job:

Dress the part

The first thing people will notice about you when you get introduced to the team is your outfit. People will judge you from what you are putting on before they get to know what you can do. Ensure you dress appropriately and professionally in accordance to the company policy or how other people in the company are dressing.

Plan ahead

You already know what is expected of you at your new position, to get ahead of everything plan your work in advance. Ensure you set your monthly career goals down to the specific daily goals you want to achieve. Remember you might want to impress your new bosses by how hardworking you are but you can’t do everything all at once.

Build connections

Remember you are the newbie at the office, you will need to build relationships with your colleagues and bosses. Get to know them as they know you, understand them too so that your transition is fast and easy. The last thing you want is your colleagues thinking you are unapproachable and unaccommodating.

Identify potential allies

When you start a new job you want to identify who is who in your department. Take time to learn their names and how they work, this can be the best tool you can arm yourself with. Get to know those who can be your potential allies, at the work place you will need people who can have your back and not constantly throw you under the bus.

Show initiative

Remember you were hired because you are needed, do not just sit and wait for your boss to look for you. Wake up early and come to work on time, ask your boss and colleagues how you can help, be available to provide solutions on areas of weakness. When you show your readiness to work it helps you stand out from the rest of the pack.

Avoid office gossip

In every office we have those who never quite appreciate their workplace. They will try to initiate you into their gossip group but stay positive and focused on what brought there. When office gossip gets into your head, you develop a bad attitude and this could eventually affect your productivity and your relationships with others.

Be open-minded

When you go to a new place, you must first do as the Romans do before you start imposing your ideas or methods on them. Also be receptive of change and show a positive attitude towards learning new things, this will make it easier for you to grasp the concepts faster. Be curious and ask how you are doing, take criticism positively and use this as an opportunity to learn.

Tip: Getting the job is only the first part of your career growth, exceling at it is a whole new other business that takes time, planning, and patience.
