The Zombie is a sweet and fruity cocktail from the Tiki tradition, made with different fruit juices, liqueurs and several kinds of rum. It was first made in late 1934 by Donn Beach at his Hollywood bar and restaurant, Don the Beachcomber. The drink got even more attention when it was served at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

The story goes that Donn Beach created the Zombie cocktail to help a customer get over a hangover before a business meeting. A few days later, the man came back and joked that he had felt like a zombie the entire trip. The drink tastes light and fruity, but it's very strong. Because of this, Don the Beachcomber only allowed two guests to order at a time. Beach once said the drink could make someone feel “like the walking dead.”

The original recipe includes three types of rum, lime juice, falernum (a sweet Caribbean syrup), Angostura bitters, Pernod (which tastes like licorice), grenadine, and “Don’s Mix” — a mix of cinnamon syrup and grapefruit juice.

INGREDIENTS:

Dark rum (25ml) or a mixture of dark rum and golden rum.

White rum (25ml) - or a mixture of white rum and overproof rum.

Lime juice (50ml).

Pineapple juice (150ml).

Ice cubes.

1 tablespoon of Grenadine.

For the garnish.

Wedge of orange.

Maraschino cherries.

Mint sprig.

HOW TO MAKE IT:

STEP  1.

Start by filling a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and pour the rums and fruit juices into it. Shake the cocktail shaker quite hard until the outside of the shaker feels really cold.

STEP 2.

Once cold, carefully strain the mixture into a tall hurricane glass that is filled with ice cubes. Then, slowly add the Grenadine in order to colour the drink.

STEP 3.

Once you are done, what remains is to garnish. Skewer the Maraschino cherries and orange wedge onto a cocktail stick. Then garnish your Zombie Cocktail with Mint sprigs and the skewered fruit on the cocktail stick. Garnishing is not mandatory, but it makes the Zombie Cocktail look amazing.

This enticing recipe is by Miriam Nice of BBC Good Food. Just like its name, you should drink it responsibly since it is not for “light-weights.”
