I always seem to be in low spirits. This doesn’t stop me from leading a normal life, but it makes everything feel harder and less worthwhile. There’s no obvious reason for these feelings and I’ve had them for a while. How can I feel better?

You may be suffering from depression. This could manifest as feeling down, upset or tearful; finding no pleasure in life; feeling guilty, worthless or numb; or being unable to relate to other people. Depression and anxiety often occur together, so you may also experience restlessness and agitation, and have difficulty sleeping or eating.
Are you avoiding activities you usually enjoy? Are you finding it difficult to remember things or concentrate? Have you lost interest in sex? Do you smoke or drink too much? Do you feel tired all the time? Do you overeat? Do you have aches and pains with no obvious physical cause?
Depression often runs in families and is frequently triggered by life events such as job loss or change, break-up, bereavement, moving house, marriage or health problems. Certain medications can also cause it, so check the list of side effects for any medication you’re taking. Depression is also often caused by difficult experiences in childhood, such as neglect or physical, sexual or emotional abuse.

Getting plenty of sleep, eating well, keeping active and avoiding alcohol will help. It is also important to challenge negative thoughts. Even if you don’t feel up to seeing anyone, keep in touch by sending them messages.
Keep a diary of changes in your mood. Try to spot things that make you feel better or worse.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the most effective treatment, either on its own or in combination with antidepressants. Simply sharing your experiences with a counsellor can help you feel better, but CBT will also help you to challenge your negative thoughts.
