Now, a lifetime of cuddling on the sofa and arguing about the correct position of the toilet seat and who last put the bins out await you. Except, that's not all you can expect from moving in with your partner. Making that important step to consolidate belongings and share a space comes with many warm and fuzzy rewards, but also some downsides - and we're not just talking about spats over domestic drudgery.
It's all to do with your feet. Specifically, the microbial community on your feet. This delightful community of bacteria can predict who we live with.
· Researchers analysed 330 skin swabs from 17 different locations on volunteers' skin, including upper eyelids, nostrils, hands and armpits.
· When comparing those samples to the volunteers’ partners, what they found was the bottom of the feet showed the highest agreement between couples.
When you think about it, this makes perfect sense.
"You shower and walk on the same floor barefoot," explains Biology Professor Josh Neufeld, "and this process likely serves as an effective form of microbial exchange with your partner, and also with your home itself."
