GOtv champions Sofapaka have a chance to defend their title when they play Nakuru All Stars in the opening match of the tournament.
According to the draws released yesterday, Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia, who lost in last year’s quarter finals, will play Langata Gremio, while KPL’s Muhoroni Youth will meet Kitengela Shooters.
Majority of the KPL sides will face weak opposition, at least on paper, but considering some of the results registered last year, then upsets will surely be in the offing.
AFC Leopards, who lost to Sofapaka in the semi-finals, play Ligi Ndogo, whom they defeated in last year’s quarter finals. Struggling Tusker have a relatively easy fixture against Nyakach in the first round.
Speaking during the draw yesterday, SuperSport East Africa General Manager, Auka Gacheo, said they are proud of they association they’ve had with Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
“When we look back at our association with the federation, we can only say that it has been very positive and led to the growth and development of the sport. We are committed to take it even further in the remaining years,” he said.
GOtv General Manager Felix Kyengo said they have seen tremendous growth in the tournament in the last three years. The championship now has 64 teams from the initial 48.
“We will have no byes this year and expect a battle of titans as Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and FKF PL teams battle it out,” he said.

He revealed that the company’s involvement in the tournament is to develop local content as well as bring local football to its viewers.
“We want our viewers to get the best entertainment, whether local or international, as well as make the GOtv brand a household name.”
Kyengo further said their concern for the low standards of local football is another motivation for them to sponsor the tournament, which he hopes will help improve the game.
He challenged participating clubs to ensure matches are peaceful, which will attract more fans. FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya regretted that the tournament will start late, but insisted that it was due to reasons beyond their control.
“This is one of our best tournaments we have had over the years. We are grateful to GOtv for standing by us and assure that we will also stand by them,” he said.
