Decorating struggles? Design ideas for wall niches

Living

You have moved into a house with a wall niche and have no idea how to incorporate it into your design. Maybe you are putting up a new house and a wall niche is on your mind. Wall niches are recessed “caves” on a wall. They have been part of interior architecture for centuries now. Niches are a nice detail in home interiors and may seem intimidating at first. However, if you find a practical and beautiful function for a wall niche, you are on your way to a stunning focal point. Here are several ways to creatively use wall niches.

Reading nook

The right size of nook can transform into a cool reading nook for day and night for both adults and children. Add a cushion, a few pillows, install a reading light and you have your reading nook.

Décor display

Do you have too many vases and sculptures and nowhere to display them? A wall niche that has enough space to accommodate them would make a wonderful museum. Accent pieces pop better if your background wall is white or a soft neutral.

Fireplace

If you have always fancied a fireplace a niche would be a great space to put a portable fire gadget for the cold evenings. If you think of it a traditional fireplace is a niche with a chimney provision.

Bookshelf

A blank long wall can be turned into a bookshelf area by adding a few shelves. You will need to hire your local fundi to get the shelves installed.

Media station

Set up your media station in a wall niche positioned in your living room’s focal point and say goodbye to speakers in every corner.

 Made-to-fit furniture

Made to fit furniture will give your wall niche a built in look. You can fit in console tables, shoe racks, benches, study desks and storage furniture.
