Deaths from Covid-19 have surpassed 2,000 in Kenya.
The Ministry of Health yesterday reported 17 deaths from Covid-19, raising the total fatalities since the disease was reported in the country to 2,011. Seven of the deaths were reported in the previous 24 hours, while the other 10 were from reconciliation of death records through an ongoing audit being carried out by the ministry.
In the last week, 98 people have been reported dead from Covid-19. This is also the week that the country recorded the highest number of fatalities in a day since the pandemic was reported locally on March 13, last year.
On March 19 the Ministry reported 28 deaths, which is the highest number of fatalities the country has reported in 24 hours. This rise in deaths comes with an increase in the number of patients, who are in need of critical care, especially supplemental oxygen.
On Friday the number of patients in ICU was 123. Those on supplemental oxygen were 148. “The rising cases are an indication that we have lowered our guard and majority of us have thrown all caution to the wind,” said Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi.
Majority of those who are succumbing to the virus, according to the Ministry of Health, are individuals aged 60 or above, most of them with underlying medical conditions.
As per Sunday's update by Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, there were 889 patients in hospital admission, of which 121 were in ICU. At least 32 of the 121 are on ventilatory support and 86 on supplemental oxygen. Three were on observation. Another 59 patients are on supplemental oxygen.
