Public service vehicles will start operating from the Green Park bus terminus next week, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services has announced.
The terminus, one of the six commissioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2020 to decongest the central business district (CBD), will be open for use to PSVs in phases.
Each terminus is between 1-1.5km long and has at least six shelters with benches for passengers as they wait to board the matatus.
NMS Director-General Mohammed Badi said the first phase will start on May 24, which will see PSVs plying Ngong Road and Argwings Kodhek pick and drop passengers at the terminus.
The second phase will begin on May 27, where PSVs plying Lang’ata Road will pick and drop passengers at the terminus, which can accommodate 140 matatus.
The Sh250 million bus terminus was built to restore order in the CBD’s roads. Construction started in November 2020 before it was expanded last year to accommodate boda bodas and taxis to ferry commuters to their final destinations.
A Bus Rapid Transport system was also unveiled to ferry commuters to the CBD. Some features of the terminus include a police post, dispensary, restaurants, supermarket, modern ablution and restrooms to be used by commuters and PSV operators.
The announcement comes amid plans by NMS to establish the Fig Tree terminus at the Globe Cinema roundabout to further decongest the CBD. NMS plans to acquire the land that’s used by mechanics and convert it for use by PSVs plying the Juja Road and Thika Road routes.
There are plans for four other PSV termini: Desai and Park Road, Muthurwa-Landhies Road, and Bunyan-Workshop Road, to decongest the city.
Desai and Park Road termini, which will serve as pick up and drop off points for long-distance PSVs from Mt Kenya that currently terminate at Tea Room and Accra Road, have been completed.
The Muthurwa-Landhies Road terminus for matatus plying Jogoo and Lusaka roads, and the Fig Tree terminus for matatus using Waiyaki Way are currently under construction.
The Bunyala and Workshop Road terminus will be used by matatus plying Mombasa Road, South B, South C, Industrial Area, Imara Daima, Athi River, Kitengela and Machakos routes.
