How to live a normal life if you’re suffering from PCOS

Health

Living with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a life changing experience.

The condition brings symptoms like unwanted hair growth, hair loss, weight gain, mood swings and other disheartening changes.

This makes it hard to live a normal life because it’s a life long illness. Some days will be harder than others and people need to be more aware of how it’s affecting their sister, daughter, colleague or anyone else batting PCOS for that matter.

If you want to make the symptoms more manageable, you have to actively take control of your life. Here are a few tips to help you

Do some research

Google can be your best friend if you’re searching for constructive content. Your focus shouldn’t be on horrifying stores to do with the condition, but rather those that actually encourage you to keep moving forward.

You’ll get good leads on how to manage symptoms and you can listen to brave stories of how other women are beating the condition. This will give you a lot of insight on remedies you can try out and things to avoid as well.

Get a supportive doctor

Coming to terms with the reality that you have PCOS is not easy at all. Things can only get worse if you combine that stress with a doctor who isn’t concerned about your emotional welling as well.

There are so many doctors who are willing to listen and encourage you through the healing process. You shouldn’t have to be fixated on someone if you don’t feel like you’re being handled with care.

Work on your diet

If you have access to a nutritionist, take their directives seriously. If you don’t have one, you can do some research to at least have a rough idea of what you should eat and what you should avoid. Spare some time to come up with a proper diet plan that will provide your body with all the nutrients it needs. Certain foods like refined meals and sugary foods cause inflammation and they can increase the frequency of acne breakouts.

Remember that there are also other complications with PCOS like diabetes and you have to watch what you eat to prevent the chances of developing these conditions.

Prioritize your mental health

Women with PCOS experience sudden mood shifts. This causes anxiety, depression, irritability, low self-esteem and even suicidal thoughts.

In order to manage these episodes, you should be more self-aware so that you can separate your feelings from experiences.

You’ll learn to understand that those emotional shifts aren’t always as a result of what’s happening around you and you’ll be in a better position to stabilize your mood.

Exercise

The right type of exercise is the key to reaching your weight loss goals. Obesity is a common feature of the condition and it makes it hard to lose weight. The exercises you can do are high intensity training and resistance training.

They get the body running to burn fat and build muscle. But you have to be careful with the exercises you do because you don’t want to stress your body too much. You should take enough breaks during your workout to give your body time to recover.

And as you work out don’t put too much emphasis on comparing yourself with other people’s progress. Just do your best to meet your own targets.

Go for counselling

You might be coping with disappointments like infertility, hair loss or even hair growth in unusual places. You shouldn’t have to deal with those overwhelming emotions alone and you need to find a counsellor who is ready to listen.

It might be a fertility counsellor for example or anyone who you feel is suitable. Bottom line is, talk to someone if you need to and don’t feel embarrassed about it.
