An online survey of 2,000 women found they kiss the most “frogs” at the age of 21.
Psychologist Donna Dawson said: “The best way to meet a partner is through friends, who know what you’re like.
“When we kiss, the chemicals in saliva heighten attraction and give the illusion of compatibility.”
In spite of that, six in 10 say at least one snog has left them repulsed.
That may include some of the 44% who admit kissing a married man – with a similar number calling it their top regret.
But a third said their biggest misgiving was snogging a work colleague and 11% had smooched with the boss.
The survey by Smint, launching its pink Strawberry Mix for Breast Cancer Care, found 21% have been put off by a date with bad breath.
Kissing Frogs
But a spokeswoman said: “We love that the research shows women are confident in their pursuit of love.”
Donna added: “Kissing is a very powerful action and should be used carefully. Lips send sensory information to our brains, which connects to our arousal zones.”
And while 27% say they are still puckering up to the wrong people, or have given up looking, the rest have had their fairytale ending after finally kissing their prince.
