Decline continues in local cricket

August

Kenya had a miserable tour of Europe, where they only won two out of ten matches.

They beat a second string Netherlands side and a low scoring Canada before losing to club side Abeed Janmohamed XI, Scotland, Ireland and Netherlands in a series of Twenty20 qualifiers and Three-dayers.

Of most concern during the tour were the on-field results, particularly the side’s failure to qualify for next year’s ICC World Twenty20 Cup.

Apart from the tournament being high profile, it would have earned CK Sh19.5 million participation fee.

September

Thomas Odoyo, who last year won the best associate player of the year, and youngster Alex Obanda got nominations for the ICC awards, but missed out on the prizes.

The same month, the national team succumbed to an embarrassing whitewash by a visiting Pakistan Academy side coached by former national team tactician Nazzar Mudassar.

October

Batsman Seren Waters,18, son of former selectors’ chief David Waters earned a controversial call-up to the national team ahead of a crucial Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland.

Kenya lost the match to Ireland by an innings-and-65 runs to miss the finals of the Intercontinental Cup competition.

November

Cricket Kenya appointed a three-man task force on a fact-finding mission to establish the current position as related to the standards, management and performances of the national team.

The three members of the task force are Jasmer Singh, a long-standing administrator; Phil Toye, the current chairman of Kongonis Club; and Sharad Rao, Kenya’s representative on the ICC’s Code of Conduct Commission.

December

Kenya national women’s team lost to rivals and reigning champions Uganda by ten runs in the finals of the East Africa Women Cricket Championships in Nairobi.

What does 2009 hold?

Kenya has to continue to press for matches and make more players professional. A vital year indeed as the crucial 2009 World Cup Qualifiers are scheduled for April.
