Exclusive: Meet the ‘Son of God’

Born in DRC, Jonathan Budju aka ‘Son of God’ speaks to Standard Entertainment from Canada on working with Fally Ipupa and his planned Kenyan tour among other revelations.

Question: First of all, why do you call yourself Son of God?

Answer: I am a born-again Christian and so basically I am a child of God. That is what this simply should mean.

Q: You once lived in Uganda before moving to Canada. Take us through this journey.

A: I was born in DRC in 1998 and there is where I started singing at a young age. I used to sing with my brothers before a fled Congo because of war. After settling in Uganda, my friends and I started a gospel music group, 24 Elders, and after a while we moved to Montreal in Canada where I am to-date.

Q: The group is still together?

A: No. We separated after being together for four years. I am a solo artist now. I just released a new song called Matthieu 6, which is doing relatively well in the market. Apart from music, we run kids rescue centres in Uganda, Congo and Burundi.

Q: You have a project coming up. Tell us about this.

A: Yes, I am working on a music project with Fally Ipupa whose music I have always admired. I am also visiting Kenya soon where I will be working with a number of artists. I would like to work with Ringtone among others.

Q: Why Kenya?

A: I have a very soft spot for Kenyans. At the same time, I feel that this is the best spot to spring my solo career as it is the top entertainment hub in Africa. Many artistes across Africa get their careers blooming once they visit Kenya. You people are blessed. I also happen to know a number of Kenyan artiste whom I would like to do projects with.

Q: You come out as a guy with very high fashion sense…

A: Thanks for that. Being the Son of God, I believe I should reflect his glory in every good way so fashion should count.
