If you’re an OG Genge fan, you’re definitely familiar with Nonini. Christened Hubert Mbuku Nakitare, Nonini’s fame grew with his hit single ‘Manzi wa Nairobi’ making him a household name in the Kenya Urban Music scene. His lyrics brewed controversy among the older generation even as the youth could be heard singing along with gusto.
He founded P-Unit that produced a number of hits and in 2007 won a Kisima Award. This is just one of several awards that the artiste has under his belt, including being named as one of the 100 most influential Kenyans by the Standard, also in 2007.
More recently, Nonini has been giving back to society through various causes. Nonini hosted an event on Facebook dubbed Music for Sanitary Towels, a collaboration of Kenyan creatives, to raise funds to supply sanitary towels to the women in Mathare during this Covid-19 period.
We celebrate Nonini today for his contribution to Kenyan music and the work he is doing for less-fortunate women.
