If you have ever thought of adopting in Kenya then this is the article for you. Today we talk about the requirements one is supposed to meet and the guidelines for adopting.

Adoption is the legal process by which an adult applicant gets the authority to act as a child's parent. The application is made to the High Court of Kenya. The process is done in chambers thus identity of both the child and the applicant is kept confidential. When one adopts they take total responsibility of the child as though they were their biological parent.

Who can be adopted?

1.     Child must be at least 6 weeks old and declared free for adoption.

2.     A child who is above 14 years can give their own consent.

For Kenyan applicants who would wish to adopt they should meet the following qualifications:

1.     Must be above 25 years and 21 years more than the child.

2.     Aged between 25 and 65

3.     Is a mother or father of child.

4.     In case of a joint application the couple must have been married to one another for at least three years.

5.     Single applicants cannot adopt children of opposite sex unless under special circumstances.

For international applicants the qualifications include:

1.     Only married couples may apply for an international adoption;

2.     All applicants must have completed and complied with the accepted adoption proceedings in their home country before making the application;

3.     A certified home study report from a certified adoption agency, certified social worker or other relevant authority;

4.     Verification by the relevant authority of the country of the parents’ origin that the child will be granted citizenship once the adoption order is granted;

5.     Prospective adoptive parents must reside in Kenya with the child for at least three months before legal procedures begin.
