The families of baby girls swapped at birth 20 years ago are suing a maternity clinic for £10million.

Sophie Serrano’s baby Manon had jaundice and at a day old was put in an incubator next to a newborn, Melanie, with the same condition at the clinic in Cannes, France.

The babies were returned to the wrong mothers, in neighbouring private rooms.

When Sophie complained her daughter’s skin was too dark she was told incubator lamps were to blame.

Manon was teased for not looking like her father and tests when she was 10 showed that neither he nor Sophie were her parents.

The girls’ families, who lived just three miles apart, decided not to reclaim their biological children.

They pressed criminal charges against the clinic but the case was dismissed as the incident had happened a decade before and came under the statute of limitations.

The clinic is refusing to pay, blaming a nursing auxiliary who was an alcoholic.
