Confessions: My brother's kid might be mine but news would devastate him after wife's death

A man who had an affair with his brother's wife made a promise to her before she passed away that he would tell his brother of the possibility that he may be the father of their child.

As his brother struggles to come to terms with his wife's death, the man has been left in a moral dilemma, knowing the news would be another huge blow to his sibling.

The anonymous man explains his brother Greg's wife, Ellie (names have been changed) recently passed away from illness and there is a 'strong possibility' that their young child is actually his.

He and Ellie had an affair shortly after she married Greg and when she fell pregnant after they slept together, they made an agreement never to him as it 'would devastate him'.

Ellie revealed that just based on the timeline of when they slept together, the child may be his.

Near the end of her illness, Ellie told the man she would eventually like Greg to know what happened between them and made him promise to tell his brother.

"I promised her that I would just to give her some peace," he wrote on Reddit.

"I still have not told Greg and I don’t think I ever will. He has been hyper depressed since Ellie died and telling him this would just devastate him, let alone ruin our relationship.

"For all practical reasons, [the child] is his. He is the one that has raised her and neither of them know any different.

"Especially since Ellie died, I think it would just be cruel to tell him that his child might not even be his.

"On the other hand, I did promise Ellie that I would tell him, and if she is actually my child, I don’t know if it would be better for that to be out in the open or not."

Others were unanimous in their verdict that he should never reveal what happened to his brother and should instead take the secret 'to the grave'.

"There is absolutely no reason to put this burden on your poor brother," one said.

"You and your brother share the same genes so she doesn't need to know for medical reasons.

Another replied: "This guy has been raising his daughter all this time. She’s his daughter. And beyond that, he’s her father.

"You should have to carry the shame of what you did, but you shouldn’t destroy two innocent people because of some deathbed promise you made."
