Women in Saudi Arabia are certainly looking forward to Friday as it will be their first time ever to attend a men’s match, the Saudi Arabian Government announced. "The first match that women will be allowed to watch will be Al-Ahli versus Al-Batin on Friday January 12," the ministry of information said in a statement on Monday.
Despite being in the 21st century, the Saudi Arabian Kingdom has some of the world’s strictest rules on women and has long barred them (women) from sports arenas by strict rules on segregation of the sexes in public.
The conservative kingdom has however in recent months eased some of its most notorious restrictions on women, including the lifting of a driving ban -- set to go into effect in June. Also, Saudi Arabia’s religious police last month announced that women would be allowed to ride bikes and motorbikes in recreational areas provided that they are properly dressed and accompanied by a male relative.
