Ingredient of the week: Sugarcane

Did you know that sugarcane, or muwa (plural miwa) in Kiswahili, is a perennial grass? They grow really tall -- anything from two feet to even 20 feet and taller.

The sugarcane trunk, which has a green hard cover, can be as thick as two inches in diameter. The base of the cane forms lateral shoots that produce multiple thick stems.

As a student in India, I drank lots of sugarcane juice which was cooling, sweet and relishing. Now, as a parent, I still enjoy the nourishing sweetness of this edible grass and share it with my children who, thankfully, love it too.

Sugarcane juice has tons of health benefits though not so for people who have diabetes as sugarcane is extremely high in sugar. It has nutrients that strengthen bones, enhance digestion, relieve stress and boost energy. Chewing on sugarcane fights bad breath and cavities.

A surprising fact about sugarcane is the benefit skin gets from it. Consumed in juice form (with or without additives), it helps reduce blemishes, fight acne, keeps skin supple and delays aging.

Simple healthy cane juice recipe: Add lime juice to squeezed cane juice, coconut water and ginger juice. It tasted better when served chilled.
