Valentine’s Day is the day when people extend feelings of love, affection and friendship. It’s a great opportunity to show appreciation for the people they love or desire a relationship with.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in various ways in Kenya and across the world. It is a time for expressing love in various ways, for some it is about a bunch of roses that tells it all, for others, an intimate dinner, a box of chocolates, expensive jewellery, a phone call.

For the bold and creative it is an opportunity to express an interest in a relationship while others pop the big question.

This day remains memorable to many who hold dear moments with their loved ones; for Rachel, she had a special treat for Valentine’s last year from her lover while he proposed marriage to her with an engagement ring. The proposal had lots of frills attached.

Rachel admits proudly that Paul is not a singer, not even a bathroom one, neither is he the romantic type. He actually surprised me too.

He practiced, “The Love Story” for several months, memorised the song and sang it to her before popping the ring. Rachel says she was blown away. “Of course, I said yes,” Rachel says. “It’s a pity I have no photographs, nevertheless, the memory remains clear in my mind.”

I felt special; the words of the song have so much meaning and depth;

He said to me; Rachel, my darling Rachel...

Where do I begin

To tell the story of how great a love can be The sweet love story that is older than the sea The simple truth about the love she brings to me Where do I start?

With your first hello

You gave new meaning to this empty world of mine

There’d never be another love, another time You came into my life and made the living fine You fill my heart

You fill my heart with very special things With angels’ songs , with wild imaginings You fill my soul with so much love That anywhere I go I’m never lonely With you around, who could be lonely I reach for your hand-it’s always there..... “The rest is history”

For those that will celebrate with loved ones, enjoy yourself and reminisce. For those who find themselves alone, there is no reason to be miserable. Single and free to mingle or not being single on Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a day of feeling sorry for yourself.

Break away from tradition and re-invent the day as a reflection of who you are and celebrate your life, counting your blessings one by one. It will put you in touch with how great your life is and remind you this is one day in the year.

It is also a great opportunity to reach out to others; family, colleagues, friends. If you are up to it get your single friends together for dinner. Celebrate being single, and enjoy some good company, enriching your life.

Who says you need a companion for a single day? Valentine’s, love, life and romance is about more than spending a day with a prospective. Consider treating yourself to a spa or a long bubble bath. Whatever you do, remember a little pampering goes a long way.
