Step-parenting can be an extremely disruptive process, especially for the children. They often feel like their original unit has been dismantled and view the incoming figure as a threat. Thus the last thing that the child needs is confusion from differing systems and standards. Here are four tips that will make your journey easier.

1. Power in unity

Children thrive on structure and routine. Therefore, both the biological and stepparents must set the standards for the new family situation. You must speak and act in one voice. The child should not only see you as part of the unit but they should experience your drive and desire to work at the unity and wellness of the family.

2. Unconditional love

One innate desire of any human being is to know that they belong. That they are cherished and wanted. As a stepparent, this is one value that you need to keep in sharp focus. The child should know that they are loved not matter what. They also need to know that you will protect them from external pressure, both from relatives and friends.

3. Acceptance

This is a two-way process. As a stepparent, you need to appreciate that the child comes to you with experiences and relationships that you were never a part of. They may resist your authority at first.

The child's biological parent has to work as hard as the stepparent to help transition the child into this new realm. The reality is that there will be many low moments. However, do continue building on the positive moments of your relationship with the stepchild.

4. Professional and spiritual guidance

Parenting is a journey that often involves a community. There will be low moments that will test all involved and it is best to seek help when needed. This could be either expert help or spiritual guidance depending on your faith. All this is done in a quest to become a better role model to your stepchild.
