5 things you should never lie to your doctor about

Health

Some questions are just damn right intrusive. Well, at least it’s the doctor asking and you are assured of confidentiality. But you still don’t want to spill the beans because it is embarrassing and you might be asked to explain urgh!

But the reason you are in hospital in the first place should give you reason to open up. You are there because you need help. Don’t expect them to read your mind. Therefore, to make everyone’s life a little less stressful it is important to tell the doctor everything he or she needs to give you the proper diagnosis and treatment.

Here are five things you should never lie to your doctor about.

Age

Most of us want to be 18 or 21 forever but that cannot be. Always give your right age regardless of the impression you have created for yourself. If you do not, you will make it difficult for the doctor to trust any other information you may give him. Even worse is, there are certain conditions that affect specific age groups and lying about your age could lead to a misdiagnosis.

Lifestyle

Most people tend to lie about how much alcohol or cigarettes they smoke in a day because they are afraid the doctor will ask them to cut down or stop, and rightly so. You need to open up about that because of the medication you may be prescribed that can react with alcohol possibly leading to death or complicating simple surgeries that could lead to irreversible damage.

Food

Many people struggle with maintaining a healthy diet and doctors know this. There is nothing new you are going to tell him that he hasn’t already encountered. Therefore, spill the beans on your bad eating habits, cravings and what not. This will help your doctor advice you accordingly and treat you appropriately.

Abortion

This is a very personal choice some women have had to make in their lives. And while it may not be the easiest thing to talk about, you must reveal this to your doctor especially if you’re in hospital for lady related issues. This will give the doctor a full understanding of your condition and he or she will be able to make an informed decision about what is happening in your body.

Mental issues

Opening up about mental health is difficult considering the stigmatization it carries and the embarrassment that stops people from talking about it. But there is nothing to be ashamed of because it is a disease like any other. Being anxious, depressed, bulimic, anorexic, etc is something most people have struggled with at one point in their lives so let your doctor. It will help them know how to approach the whole situation.
