Ohio, USA: A furious husband bit off a chunk of a love rival's ear after returning home to find him in bed with his wife, it was reported.

Virgil Bates III admitted a charge of aggravated assault following the attack on Matthew Tipton in Ohio on June 24.

Bates, 40, from Toledo, had initially been charged with felonious assault but admitted the amended charge, The Blade reported.

He reportedly told Lucas County Common Pleas Judge, Ruth Ann Franks,: "I was able to get [Tipton] in a headlock.

"He proceeded to clamp down and bite my forearm. I proceeded to panic, and I wound up biting his ear, and a piece of his ear came off."

Bates is due to be sentenced on August 31.

He faces up to 18 months in prison however prosecutors are expected to recommend that he is sent to a treatment centre and then given community service, The Blade reported.

He is currently being held on $25,000 bond.

The court heard 44-year-old Tipton's ear could not be repaired.
