Five foods that lower your risk of developing cancer

Healthy Eating

There is no single food, or food component, that can protect you against cancer alone. However, according to research, diets made of a variety of vegetables, fruits, wholegrains and other plant foods helps in lowering the risk of developing cancer. Some of the foods that contain naturally occurring compounds and have anticancer properties include:

Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor a way. Apples have polyphenols- plant based compounds that may prevent inflammation, cardiovascular diseases and infections. Polyphenols also have promising anticancer properties.

Berries

Berries are known to have potential health benefits including their antioxidant properties. According to studies, the anti-inflammatory effect in certain kinds of berries (including blueberries) can lower growth of cancer tumors.

Carrots

Carrots contain a number of essential nutrients including antioxidants. They also contain high amounts of beta-carotene (responsible for the distinct orange colour) which plays a role in supporting the immune system and preventing certain types of cancers. According to research, the high your consumption of carrots lowers the risk of developing some kinds of cancer including stomach cancer.

Oily fish

Oily fish such as mackerel and salmon are rich in nutrients, potassium and omega-3 fatty acids. Consuming fish or fish oil supplements at least four times a week lowers oneslikelihood of developing cancers such as colorectal cancer and prostate cancer.

Legumes

Legumes such as beans, lentils and peas are rich in fiber that helps lower ones risk of developing cancer. Consuming diets high in legumes fiber lowers the risk of developing breast cancer.
