Five super foods to boost hair growth

Health
Every strand of hair on your scalp grows according to what you feed it with

Our hair may appear thick and shiny or dry and flaky once in a while. This is brought about by the state of the scalp and general inner health.

We all desire to have that thick healthy looking mane, but do we really know how to achieve it? We try out different endless products on the supermarket shelves hoping the promises they make come true.

Sometimes they work, but at times they leave us with breaking and slow-growing hair.

One thing you should know is that your hair’s appearance is greatly affected by the food you eat. This is because just like other body parts, your scalp requires constant nourishment.

From enough oxygen supply to nutrients, every strand of hair on your scalp (made up of protein keratin) grows according to what you feed it with.

Hair friendly foods include;

Eggs

The egg yolk is packed with high levels of protein, minerals, and B-complex vitamins all which keeps the keratin in your hair follicles replenished.

This in turn stimulates new hair growth, adds volume and thickens your hair. The fats found in eggs also act as natural conditioners hence giving your hair the desired texture.

Eggs have sometimes been used in hair products without necessarily being served as food.

Green leafy vegetables

Spinach, kales, collard greens and other veggies in this cluster are loaded with iron which is essential for your hair.

This is because adequate iron maintains a steady supply of oxygen to your scalp which is key to hair growth.

These amazing foods also contain good amounts of Vitamin A, enough to facilitate the production of sebum, necessary for scalp moistening.

Avocado

This amazingly popular fruit has many health benefits owing to its richness in protein, magnesium, folic acid, potassium, amino acids and vitamins among others.

Vitamin E repairs the damage on the scalp that is likely to slow or prevent hair growth, while vitamin B is essential for hair growth.

Natural oils found in avocado lock moisture into hair cells, nourishes hair cells, and strengthens hair roots, shaft and strands. Just like eggs, avocado may be applied to hair directly before rinsing.

Nuts and seeds

Pumpkin seeds, chia, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and sesame among others are rich in amino acids such as L-lysine which is key in facilitating hair growth.

Peanuts, almonds cashew nuts and others are rich in biotin, a property necessary for easy hair growth.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids found in most nuts and seeds protect your scalp by nourishing it and preventing dryness or flakiness, making a suitable environment for strong hair producing follicles.

Carrots

Like other yellow and orange foods, carrots are a great source of Beta-carotene, a nutrient essential for scalp health.

Carrots are also rich in vitamin A, which is responsible for cell growth. This is essential as our hair contains the fastest growing tissues in the body.

The Vitamin A in carrots also keeps our scalp moistened by enabling production of sebum in healthy amounts.
