KSCE candidate keen to make mark at World Championships.
Youngster Celliphine Chepteek Chespol is out to make a name in 3,000m steeplechase having won the waters and barriers race at the trials.
18-year-old Chespol, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination candidate at Riruta Central Secondary School in Nairobi has had impressive season in the Diamond League series so far.
The fast rising star already has global titles under her belt having won the 2000m steeplechase at IAAF World Under-18 in Cali, Colombia followed by World Under-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She also won bronze in the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda, earlier this year.
The teenager stunned the world when she lost her shoe at the water jump as they headed for the bell, but chased down the race leader Beatrice Chepkoech and world record holder Ruth Jebet to break the tape in an impressive 8:58.78 smashing the world junior record at the Eugene Diamond League in June.
She also dipped her nine minutes at the trials last month clocking 9:34.03, to beat Chepkoech and Purity Cherotich to second and third places.
The Mount Elgon-born athlete draws inspiration from her mother Beatrice Naliaka and her idol Milcah Chemos, the 2013 world champion over the distance.
Inspired by Chemos
“I get a lot of motivation from mum, she has supported me since I started as a junior while still a pupil at Kipsabula Primary School before moving to Nairobi, “ said Chepsol, the last born in a family of seven.
“I have really admired Milcah (Chemos), I always wanted to be a great runner like her, and that’s my goal, I’m glad she is also the team’s steeplechase coach at the camp.”
Going to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the venue of the London World Championships, the shy teenager who is balancing between running and books said she was ready to take on the world’s best.
“I have raced against most of my opponents and I don’t see anything to worry me going to London,” she said.
The world junior champion will team up with defending champion Hyvin Kiyeng, Chepkoech and Purity Cherotich.
