A Kenyan woman recently frightened a lot of women on social media after she shared her ordeal on how she lost her appendix because of a contraception method that backfired on her.
According to the lady, what started as simply getting an IUD coil turned horrific after the coil strangely found its way to her appendix leading to an emergency surgery that saw her lose her appendix.
The woman narrated in a long Facebook post how an IUD coil inserted in her body started giving her a lot of pains two and a half years later.
''There goes my coil inside the appendix after a successful appendectomy. This was just last month when the surgery was done. I remember very well, the first day when the coil was inserted i felt so much pain, i even had to take painkillers immediately, i went home with a backache. I thought it was normal to feel the pain but that wasn't the case. A little discomfort during insertion is okay but not the pain. 2.6yrs down the line, been having pain on my left side of my abdomen, been ignoring the pain and i assumed maybe i haven’t recovered from the c's operation which was done 2yrs ago. The pain became stronger and unbearable'', the woman wrote on Facebook.
The lady said that she had to go for an ultra sound check to get to the root cause of her persistent pain. On doing the scan, the doctors discovered that the coil had been misplaced and moved to her appendix.
The peculiar situation made the doctors decide to cut her appendix in order to save her life. The lady encouraged women who use the coil as a method of family planning to go for regular checkups to avoid complications in future.
''And one day i decided to go for an ultra sound. It showed the coil was displaced. And also the results showed i had cyst. Was booked for theatre for the removal of cyst, . shock on the surgeons, i had no cyst but only for them to find the coil inside the appendix. They had to do an open surgery, for the appendectomy. That wasnt planned , it was an emergency! Laparoscopy was wat I was supposed to undergo, so they did both! Everything went well I thank God. But till today the surgeons don't understand how the coil reached there. That was the first case ever!! So my dear ones, always go for check ups , ndio ujue if the coil is still there ama it moved! Am so done wid coil, it messed me a big time!! Imenifanya nimebaki bila appendix, but isokey!'',she wrote.
