Dealing with lice infestation..in pubic hair

Health
The itch can be intense, forcing one to scratch even in public

In 2013, some preachers of biodiversity shocked the world with calls for to save pubic lice from extinction. Writing in Bloomberg, Jason Gale and Shannon Pettypiece suggested that measures ought to be put in place to curtail extinction of the intrusive insect.

Why would one lobby for the ‘rights’ of a louse anyway? Recently, in the course of a chat with a lady friend, she confided that men with lice around the pubis put her off. Knowing that lice are very tiny and therefore not easily spotted by the naked eye – especially in the thicket of pubic hair – I thought she was coming on to me. “A man who is well groomed and clean everywhere is my type,” she kept on.

Lice don’t transmit disease

Known scientifically as Pthirus pubis, pubic lice are sexually transmitted besides being characteristically identified through incessant scratching around the said thicket. The itch can be intense, forcing one to scratch even in public.

The Journal of Entomology associates all forms of body lice, including pubic lice, to bad hygiene. The insects, it appears, have a penchant for dirty places.

Reproductive health specialist Dr John Ong’ech once joked that while strange body odours can keep off some suitors, “bad hygiene can’t prevent conception.”

According to entomologist Paul Mbugi of Kenyatta University, lice survive on human blood. However, they largely remain harmless and don’t transmit diseases. Dealing with pubic lice, in Dr Ong’ech’s view, is a no-brainer: “Keep your body clean; shower well and scrub sufficiently.”

The threat of Brazilian wax

A clean shave of the pubic area would automatically deprive the lice of their habitat. Actually, Jason and Shannon only complained of the Brazilian wax – “threateningly wiping out pubic lice populations.”

One of the reasons psychologists suggest intimacy fizzles out is pegged on physical reasons. Having ‘creatures’ on your not-so-public hair makes a good case study. The extinction of pubic lice may not improve a couple’s sexual experience, but it can  bestow ‘sanity’ even ‘down under.’

I wouldn’t want my wife scratching hard while I am making advances. Would you?
