Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua (pictured) has officially apologised to Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro over his failure to invite the parliamentary leader to address mourners during the burial of Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko’s father, Gideon Kivanguli. Senate had expressed anger at the failure by the Governor to recognise Ethuro during the burial, claiming the move was meant to embarrass the Speaker.
Yesterday, Mutua (pictured) wrote to the Senate Speaker offering his apologies to him and the House, claiming that the incident was a regrettable protocol hitch. He further sought to clarify the incident, insisting it was not deliberate.
“Mr Speaker, I kindly request that you inform the distinguished honourable senators that this was purely a human error and no ill motive was intended on my part,” said Mutua, in a letter also copied to Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki (Tharaka Nithi) and his minority counterpart Moses Wetang’ula (Bungoma). The governor added: “Please accept my apologies and find this letter as good and enough explanation to the unfortunate incident.”
The Tuesday incident had infuriated senators, who on Wednesday turned their guns on Mutua, accusing him of deliberately acting to humiliate the Speaker. The senators complained that Mutua snubbed Ethuro, yet he went ahead to introduce former MPs Kalembe Ndile and Wavinya Ndeti.
But yesterday, Mutua said the incident was caused by the pressure he was under.
