Veteran all-rounder Tony Suji has been axed from the national cricket team to World Cup qualifiers in South Africa between April 1 and 19.

Suji, 33, has been a regular in the team since their historic feat in 2003 when Kenya reached the semi-final of the World Cup in South Africa.

He is the only player dropped from the squad that recently toured South Africa for build-up matches.

The list released yesterday by coach Andy Kirsten has youngsters Elijah Asoyo, Rakep Patel and Seren Waters in the team. Veteran wicket-keeper David Obuya and all-rounder Alfred Luseno missed a call again.

Kenya are in Group B with Denmark, Netherlands, Afghanistan, UAE and Bermuda. They are expected to leave on Saturday for South Africa for a two-week high performance training in Pretoria. The qualifiers commence on April 1.

"Cricket Kenya is impressed with the progress the team has made in preparation for this important tournament," said Cricket Kenya CEO Tom Tikolo.

The team is expected to play three matches and use the High Performance Centre in Pretoria for practice.

"The team will move to the tournament venue on March 27 where they will join the other 11 participants — Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, Namibia, UAE, Uganda, Afghanistan and Oman," Kirsten said.

Team: Steve Tikolo (capt), Thomas Odoyo (v/capt), Kennedy Obuya, Peter Ongondo, Morris Ouma, Alex Obanda, Collins Obuya, Hiren Varaiya, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Lameck Onyango, Elijah Asoyo, Jimmy Kamande, Rajesh Bhudiya, Rakep Patel, Seren Waters.

Officials: Daniel Macdonald Pduor (Team Manager), Andy Kirsten (coach), Martin Suji (Assistant), Sreenivas Thota (Match Analyst), Wycliffe Ogolla (Physiotherapist), Peter Kirsten (Batting Consultant).
