Two arrested as nurses attacked at hospital

Two people have been arrested over an assault on nurses at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi’s Eastlands.

The two nurses are receiving treatment after being attacked by patients who wanted to be attended to on Saturday night.

According to the police, three civilians arrived at the hospital and demanded that they be attended to immediately without following the procedure.

The nurses, however, declined since they had emergency cases. This angered the suspects who pounced on the nurses with kicks and blows.

The police said the two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court today.

Nurses union officials yesterday assembled at Mama Lucy Hospital to condemn what they termed rising cases of attacks on caregivers.

Kenya National Union of Nurses Nairobi secretary Edia Muruli said health professionals have always given their best and must be respected and protected.

"Many nurses have been injured and others killed, leaving a gap that we do not know how the authorities will fill. We need to address this issue with the seriousness that it deserves,” said Muruli.

She added: "Nurses meet many people in the course of their work. Some are unstable, upset or even stressed, yet they are not guaranteed their own protection."

In October last year, a nurse at the Kenyatta National Hospital was left fighting for her life after she was attacked by a patient's relative. The nurse, Mildred Akinyi, was hit on the head with a blunt object.

Early this year, a Nairobi South Hospital nurse was attacked by a Somali couple for demanding they sign an “Against Medical Advice Form”.

The couple had demanded that their child be discharged.

The worst case was in December 2017 when a nurse was shot dead by a patient he was attending to at Chiromo Lane Medical Centre.
