Five top causes of accidental home injury and deaths

Your Home

Although we all like to think of our homes as sanctuaries of comfort and security, but then they harbor some significant safety risks. Every year many die from accidental injuries that take place in the house, making our homes the second-most-common location of deaths. Here are some causes of home injury deaths:

Bathroom falls: Falling is the leading cause of unintentional home injury deaths according to the Home Safety Council. There are several ways to reduce this risk, including installing grab bars in bathtubs and showers to avoid hitting walls, resulting in severe injury.

Poisoning: This is the second-leading cause of deaths claiming many lives each year. Young adults and people in their middle ages have been reported victims. Most of them are perhaps on a one drug prescription but may end up mixing with other drugs with the hope of fastening the healing process without realizing that that combination can be actually deadly.

Fire and burns: Home fires and burns claim many lives a year, making it the third-leading cause of accidental home injury deaths. These happen due to few working smoke alarms and as well as faulty fire sprinklers or lack of installing fire sprinklers when building new homes.

Airway obstruction: Airway obstruction comes from choking, suffocation, and strangulation. It is the fourth-leading cause of accidental home injury deaths and a particular concern for young children. Suffocation normally happens due to an unsafe sleep environment.

Small babies always suffocate when they are placed to sleep on their stomachs, also, small items like coins or toys that can clog up air passageways if swallowed.

Water: Drowning and submersions in water account for many deaths a year. Water to children is also a staring death threat. People don't realize that a very young child can drown in as little as an inch or two or water. Certainly, a backyard pool, a bathtub, any amount of standing water can be a deadly danger to a small child.

Parents should install a fence at least 4 feet high with a self-closing and self-latching gate around their pool.
