To 11-year-old Cherono Kipkorir, she wins when she wants.

Kipkorir carded an excellent round of 42 points to emerge the overall winner of the ongoing NCBA Golf Series at the Royal Nairobi Golf Club, over the weekend.

Kipkorir becomes the third junior golfer to bag the overall winner’s position in the Series following similar feats by 12-year-old Nathan Mwangi, who won the Karen Country Club leg; and 11-year-old Mumbi Gatu, who was crowned event winner in Limuru in September.

Cherono’s heroics were enough to fend off, on countback, the challenge by fellow club mate, Mwambu Malamba, who carded a round of 42 points to claim the winner’s spot in the men’s category.

He finished ahead of Calvin Opati, another junior golfer, who impressed by carding a round of 40 points to finish second.

In the ladies’ contest, Kathure Njoroge carded 41 points to claim the top bragging rights in the category ahead of Pascalia Koske, who ended the round with 39 points.

Paul Jakaa shot 35 points to win the Staff prize while Brian Githaiga, with 34 points, won the juniors’ category.

Meanwhile, the tournament recorded a hole-in-one as handicap 16 Oscar Koitaba aced his shot at the 13th hole to record the rare feat.

The Royal Nairobi Golf Club leg was the 19th event in the Series that has featured 18 seniors’ events and one junior golf tournament.

Action now shifts to Muthaiga Golf Club for the 20th leg of the Series on Saturday.

Meanwhile, to 80-year-old General (Retired) Joseph Musomba, age is nothing but a number.

The veteran kept his cool to beat a team of 100 golfers in the 2021 Machakos School Golf day tournament, on Saturday.

Musomba, playing off handicap 13, carded 35 points to triumph in the day-long Charity Golf event for Alumni projects.

He was a point ahead of handicap 15 Tito Musyoka, who was the MSAA senior winner while handicap 27 James Kilinda, with a countback score of 39 points, won the Member prize after tying on points with handicap 19 Charles Kikuvi, who was the member runner-up.

Jennifer Mangu, playing off handicap 15, carded 35 points to emerge the lady winner on 35 points.

MSAA Chairman Justice (Rtd) Philip Waki thanked golfers for taking part in the tournament.
