Dad slammed for making daughter do chores to earn her sanitary products each month

When it comes to parenting, everyone has their own methods and styles and anything you do is likely to be criticised by someone else - for example, the amount of pocket money you choose to give or if you ground your little ones.

But one parent has really riled people up after admitting one thing he does to his daughter - that he doesn't do to his son.

The unnamed dad, 50, took to Reddit's Am I The A****** forum to explain that he is a widower and looks after his two teenage children, a 17-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter.

He pays for both of his children to do extracurricular activities but makes his daughter do housework to earn her the money for hers as he only views hers as "hobbies", while his son does not have to do chores.

In his post, he goes on to say that another reason he makes his daughter "pay him back" in chores is that he has to spend more money on her, buying "monthly supplies" AKA sanitary products for her periods.

Yes, you read that right. She has to earn her pads/tampons.

The dad's post read: "I lost my wife ten years ago. It’s just me and my two kids, recently it caused a big stink with some family that my daughter does chores, but my son does not.

"I explained it’s because I have to spend extra on my daughter each month not only for her extracurriculars, but for her monthly supplies, so it’s my way of having her pay me back. She cleans the shared living spaces and bathrooms in our apartment and cooks four meals a week.

"My brother said I spend twice as much on my son's extracurriculars and by my logic, he should have to do chores too. I explained he didn’t because I feel his could help him get into college but hers were just a hobby in my opinion."

The man's daughter overheard this conversation and was understandably very upset.

She began refusing to do chores as she no longer felt it was fair.

"I told her she’d still be doing her chores and life isn’t fair so stop being a brat, or I’d refuse to pay for her extracurricular stuff or pads. I wouldn’t actually do that, but I was mad when I said it.

"She packed a bag and took off. She’s been staying with my sister who called me an abusive a****** when I demanded she send [daughter] home. My brother and sister are coddling her and I’m furious."

More than 1,000 people responded to the Reddit post, with many taking the daughter's side and calling out the dad.
