Kawira: Ruto, DP helped restore peace among Meru leaders

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza says President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua were key players in bringing peace among the county's top leaders.

She explains that through the president's directive, his Deputy intervened, held talks with the parties, and restored peace among Meru leaders.

Days after winning on August 9, 2022, polls Kawira fell out with the County Assembly members over alleged abuse of office, gross misconduct, abuse of power as well as wrongful appointments.

Speaking during a thanksgiving church service at Kerugoya Stadium in Kirinyaga, Kawira lauded the Deputy President for stepping up, meeting Meru leaders, and restoring peace among the County's top leadership.

"I am here to say thank you to the president. The president intervened through his junior [Rigathi Gachagua] to bring peace to Meru. It has been two weeks and we have been very peaceful in Meru," Kawira says,

"The president talked to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who had a meeting with all leaders in Meru County where we settled the scores. As I am here we are now peaceful in Meru," she adds.

According to Kawira, the president is scheduled to visit Meru for a thanksgiving church service in a couple of months.

Towards the end of 2022, Governor Kawira survived the impeachment motion against her after a Senate special committee found that none of the 62 allegations leveled against her could be substantiated.

The 11-member Boni Khalwale-led committee in a report tabled before the Senate during a special sitting now gives a sigh of relief to the embattled governor that was staring at exiting the office over alleged offenses she committed while only 64 days in office.

"None of the charges was proved," Khalwale said while tabling the report.

Before appearing before Senate, the governor had fallen out with the MCAs in Meru, after which she was unanimously impeached by the County Assembly.
