Fibroids are growths that affect the uterus. They have a huge impact on your physical and psychological wellbeing and all that affects your quality of life. Although there are a number of treatments available, it’s still hard to deal with the condition because it often recurs in many women.

However, living with fibroids doesn’t have to be a life sentence. You can still live a fulfilling life through different coping mechanisms. But first, you have to go for a checkup so that a doctor can make a proper diagnosis.

Don’t be tempted to self-diagnose on the internet because it’s full of so many scary things that will discourage you. There are also other conditions that mimic the same symptoms as fibroids so eventually, you still need to get checked before anything else. If you get a confirmed diagnosis, your doctor will guide you on what to do next based on the severity of the growths.

Should it be determined you have fibroids, here are a few tips on how to manage them and live a happy healthy life.

i. Acceptance

The condition is very life changing for most women living with it. It can be terrifying to accept that some unpleasant changes are happening inside your body especially when you were just fine and healthy for years. Some even consider it to be embarrassing which causes them to hide away to avoid looking weak.

You have to accept that there are days you need some time off when the pain is overwhelming or when you’re feeling extreme fatigue. It doesn’t mean that you’re weak because these are things that you can’t really control.

ii. Practice relaxation techniques

Relaxation techniques can provide both emotional and physical healing. They might not be able to cure the condition but they’re a great way to help you cope. Things like emotional stress slowly add physical stress, which is a silent killer. It makes it harder to handle the condition and it might even increase your chances of developing stress related illnesses. Add some of the great relaxation techniques to your daily routine like mindfulness, aromatherapy and mediation.

iii. Surround yourself with a strong support system

Humans are naturally social beings. Women in particular feel much better when they share their problems with others. That is a huge sign that you should join support groups for women who have dealt with fibroids or talk to your friends about it. You’ll realize that so many women are dealing with it, which is very comforting because you won’t feel so isolated. You can even find a therapist who you share your pain with. Always keep in mind that living silently with fibroids isn’t going to make things better.

iv. Adjust your diet and exercise more

Once you’ve been diagnosed with fibroids, you have to make a couple of adjustments. Certain foods will worsen the symptoms and you need to be careful with what you choose to eat. Eat enough fruits and vegetables to replenish nutrients and drink more fluids to replace some of the blood lost. An active lifestyle is also important for your physical and emotional wellbeing. It even reduces the chances of a recurrence.

As you make these positive changes in your lifestyle habits, you must stay away from drinking alcohol and smoking.

v. Do what you love

Living with fibroids shouldn’t have to shape everything you do. You might be dealing with it but it doesn’t reflect who you are as a person. You still have goals, dreams and a purpose in life. So even when the bad days hit, you’re able to soldier on and focus on the better days ahead. Focus on doing your best at work, nurture your talents and be there for your family. These are some of the areas that bring positive reinforcement in your life.
