How to get the best out of your mascara

Fashion and Beauty

Of all make up components, most ladies can agree that getting your mascara right is one of the hardest things to do right after eye liner.

And if you have probably been wondering how the perfect thick dark lashes are made, here is how:

Always apply two coats of mascara

The trick is to let the first coat dry before applying the second coat. The first coat will act like a primer and outline. When you follow it up with the second layer it will be more prominent.

Ensure the first layer dries first to prevent your mascara from clumping up and making your eyes look bulky.

Be wary of its shelf life

It is recommended that you use your mascara 2-4 months after purchase. There on, it will feel clumpy or dry. If it starts feeling dry before the due date just toss it, it will do you no good.

Keep your mascara brush clean

Don’t let your brush be crumpled up with previous used mascara. Clean your mascara brush by soaking it in hot water for five minutes.

The residual mascara will melt off leaving your brush squeaky clean. While cleaning the brush do not leave your mascara tube open. Cover it up with tissue paper to avoid drying it out.

Do not pump your mascara tube

You might think this will get more mascara to your brush but actually you are just pumping air into your tube causing it to dry out faster. Alternatively twist your wand in circles for your brush to reach the liquid.

Use the powder trick

Before applying mascara, dust face powder to your lashes first. This will help thicken the mascara and make it more flattering giving you the effect of fuller lashes

Add a saline solution drying mascara

Add about 3-4 drops of saline solution to your mascara tube once it starts to feel dry. Stir the solution to your mascara using your mascara wand. This will help moisturize your mascara.

Bend your wand

Gently bend the tip of your wand brush so that it is slightly curved. This shape will make it easier for you to apply mascara around hard-to-reach areas such as the corners of your eyes.

Get the mascara close to the eyelids

Apply mascara from the base of your lashes to the tip. As you apply, wiggle the wand so as to create an illusion of eyeliner, to achieve fuller eyelids.

To add more detail and definition, dip your eyeliner brush into your mascara tube and use it on the base of the eye to add definition.

You will probably slip up once in a while and apply excess mascara

Do not freak out. Use an eyelash comb to get rid of the mascara by running it through the lashes from the roots to tips.

You can avoid mascara marks on your face by using a spoon while applying the mascara. Hold a spoon above your eye or below. This will ensure any excess product will fall on the spoon and not on your face.
