Tips on how to help your kids find their career paths

We spent a majority of our active life working, decade after decade. Finding a job that entails doing what we actually love only makes life more fulfilling. As thus, it’s imperative that we outdo ourselves in guiding and encouraging our little ones in their quests to find and do work that they love.

Children, even when they finally make it to college, most of the time don’t have the life experiences or some self-knowledge that can guide them to a career path that best fits them. However, there are a number of things you can do as a parent to help them navigate the decisions around settling for a career.

Here, we look at some tips you can consider as you help your kid choose a career.

Your children, no matter how much they resemble you physically or in character, are unique individuals and they are not you. There are things you might be disliking about a given job but the very things could be the things your children absolutely love doing.

As a parent, you should resist the urge to advise your child against a particular career path on the basis that it’s something that doesn’t interest you. The same applies to trying to have them attend your alma matter or take the same career path you took.

If your little one is interested in a career that doesn’t appear to be aligned with his/her natural strengths, don’t be quick to rule them out of that career option. Instead, take time and try to figure out how you can help them bring their innate strengths to that particular field as their uncommon perspective and strengths could be what makes them unique and valuable in that field.

Finding a positive and encouraging role model for your child can help fuel their career aspirations. If your child has a strong interest in a given career path, you can help them by finding for them an inspiring mentor in that field, someone who can readily answer their questions as well as encourage them to be better and feel confident about taking that career path.

As a parent, you now know that your child watches your every move. It is, therefore, important that you set a great example in doing the work that you enjoy. Your child seeing you build a career that you really enjoy makes them understand that it’s possible for them to also find and do a work that they truly love.

Your child needs to understand that the quest to do a job that they love is a long process of self-discovery and experimenting, and as a parent, it is your duty to remind them of what it takes. They need to understand that they may have to change courses as they navigate their career path and that they need to learn more about themselves as they keep growing.

You also need to be patient with them as thy make the difficult decisions and encourage them to continue discovering themselves as they grow into the amazing people they are meant to be.
