How to clean your aluminum cookware without ruining them

Since the invention of nonstick pots and pans, it has been such a relief to wash cookware as they don’t burn food or easily get stained. However, there are those who still trust in aluminum cookware and the washing process is very important.

There is just a way aluminum pots and pans make your kitchen look clean when they are clean and shiny. If you are a believer, here are some tips to help you clean your aluminum cookware without ruining or scratching them:

  • Soak after cooking

Never wash your aluminum cookware immediately after cooking especially when it is stained or having burnt food particles. When you use your steel wool to scrub off the stains immediately, you are likely to ruin your pot or pan because of all the attention and scrubbing you will be putting on one area. Instead, let your pot or pan soak overnight and preferably in warm water before you wash them.

  • Wash to remove grease and stains

After soaking your cookware, next you are going to wash them using soap, a sponge and warm water to remove any grease or grime. Always use the rough side of your sponge to scrub out the burnt food you had soaked overnight and incase of stubborn stains, you can dislodge them using a wooden spoon. Do not use an aluminum spoon or fork as this will scratch and ruin your cookware.

  • Giving your cookware the extra shine

After using your aluminum pot or pan for a while, you will start to notice the inside turning black or depositing white chalky like substances, this is caused by aluminum oxidation. In order to reduce these chalky deposits or discoloration you will need to use an acidic solution to soak it off. To make your acidic solution, you can use two table spoons of white vinegar or lemon juice with a quarter cup of water stirred together. You can then allow the mixture to boil in your pot or pan for about 10 to 15 minutes. When you pour out the mixture, your pot or pan will be as good as new. After all what is an aluminum pot without some extra shine?

  • One final wash

Finally as you finish washing your cookware, you will need to give it one last rinse to remove all the acidic mixture you used in the shining process and any extra discoloration. Using soap and a sponge, wash your pan and finally rinse with warm water. As mentioned before, avoid using steel wool or other abrasive scrubbers, as this may scratch your pots and pans. Once clean, use a dish towel to dry it and your aluminum cookware should be as good as new!

Tip: Always wash your pots and pans after each use to help prevent buildup from aluminum oxidation and stubborn grease stains.
