A man who is due to marry his girlfriend has been left freaked out after being told about a wedding night 'ritual' his partner's family expect him to take part in.

He explains his fiancée has a huge extended family who are 'very warm and caring people' and he gets on really well with them.

The couple, both 23, have planned the ceremony for early next year but with arrangements getting underway, the man says he has noticed his girlfriend's cousins making jokes about their wedding night, which he found 'weird'.

As they brainstormed possible honeymoon destinations, his fiancée revealed that they wouldn't need a bridal suite at the hotel where the wedding is taking place.

She would like them to stay at her parent's house instead, which he has no problem with as they are currently trying to save money to put down a house deposit.

But sensing that his partner was holding something back, he questioned why she was pushing the idea and she said that her family have a 'really old wedding night tradition'.

He wrote: "The husband and wife go into the master bedroom together and they are supposed to 'consummate' the marriage.

"The rest of the family are waiting outside the door so they can applaud them and cheer when they come out. Then a piece of the bed sheet is cut off and sewn into a big tapestry my girlfriend's mother owns."

Seeing how uncomfortable he was with the ritual, she said they could simply 'pretend' to get it over and done with but he continued: "I don't want anything to do with this.

"I absolutely freaked and told her under no circumstances will I be doing that kind of thing in front of her whole family.

"I think she's also been texting her family about this because I received a text from her mother telling me that I 'don't understand the importance of family and tradition yet and this kind of tradition has been around longer than I've been alive'."

Unsure as to how to handle the situation, one person on Reddit replied: "This is straight up weird and I have no advice apart from the fact that tradition is just peer pressure from the dead and you need to stand your ground."

Another said: "Tell them you'll do it, in return for a dowry of 100 head of cattle, a white stallion and a tract of arable land."

A third added: "Jesus, a family sex blanket? I sure hope it's only decorative and grandma doesn't sleep with it.

Would you rather have more money or more free time?
