Nothing is more isolating than believing you are the only person going through something or feeling a certain way. If you are carrying a troubling secret, being alone with your thoughts is the loneliest place on earth and can leave you filled with hopelessness and despair.
Secrets also prevent you from making real connections with others. In order to avoid discovery, you must keep others at arm’s length, often spinning more lies in the process.
Shame festers in the darkness of secrecy, poisoning you from within and filling you with self-loathing. Shame can also be exploited by others to manipulate you, creating a further cycle of shame and secrecy.
While it may be painful to divulge a secret, once brought to light it loses its hold over you, filling you with peace and setting you on the path to self-acceptance and recovery.
