I have been working as a shoe shiner for the last three years along Tom Mboya street in Nairobi. I cannot complain about the job because it has enabled me to pay my house rent, buy food and save a little. I started this business with a capital of sh10,000, which is money I saved a after I worked for one year. The job I had didn’t pay me enough to afford rent, food and savings, which is what got me thinking about doing something that would bring in more money.
With this in mind, I decided to start my own business.
Being a shoe shiner has many challenges because at times clients harass you for no reason. I have also lost friends who don’t want to be associated with me as they think what I do is demeaning. Still, this has not deterred me because I am on a mission to provide my child with a better life. I don’t care what people say about this job because it feeds us. What annoys me is the harassment from clients. My future plan is to save enough money and start farming in my home county of Nandi.
