Achieving Woman

This week, we have been honouring mothers culminating with a special day to take mothers out and spoil them. Tomorrow, Sunday, May 8, is Mothers’ Day. It is celebrated in several countries around the world though on different dates.

Most countries including the US celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in the month of May. Many countries celebrate Mother’s Day in different times in the year. Regardless of when Mothers’ Day is celebrated, what is important is the spirit of honouring and celebrating mothers.

The origin of Mothers’ Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. However, the roots of Mothers’ Day history are traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated. Credit is given to Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, the founders.

Mothers’ Day is an opportunity to celebrate motherhood the great influence that mothers have on their children and significant others. I honour and salute every mother today! I want to make your day special and dedicate this poem to every mother.

The poem is a paraphrased of Michael Sage’s poem and Proverbs 31, specially dedicated to you Mother, I celebrate you!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

Oh Mother, Oh Mother of mine,

The light of love through you doth shine,

My character you sculpt and carefully define,

My future you determine and gently align.

Oh Mother, Oh Mother so dear,

You teach me life’s rules to which I should adhere,

When I stumble you lift me up and tell me not to fear,

And my successes you celebrate with a twinkle and a tear.

Oh Mother, Oh Mother so great,

You teach me to love and never to hate,

And your instructions ring like music in my ear,

You advise me with love that never seems to abate.

Oh Mother, Oh precious Mother,

You are the Proverbs 31 Woman more precious than Rubies

We call you blessed, so does your Husband with praise & pride

Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all Mother.

I honour you mother for all you had done to make me the best I can be

You are my role model, my guiding light

Thank you for your unwavering love for me and my siblings

I love you mother

God grant you the desires of your heart and bless you abundantly

Everywhere in the world mothers are respected for their dedication and devotion towards their children, providing care and nurturing. Count yourself blessed if you are celebrating your mother for there are some whose mother’s passed away.

No matter how much time passes, the pain of losing your mom is something that stays with you forever. I lost my mother 20 years ago and I do miss her a lot, particularly when we celebrate milestones; graduations, weddings, the birth of my grandchildren, family reunions and simply when I need someone dependable and loves me unconditionally. I know that those of you who have experienced loss will feel me.

For those who will not have a mother to celebrate with, you can celebrate a mother that you care about, love or admire. You can also choose to celebrate a mother who has no one to celebrate with.

In memory of your departed mother you can do the following; take a good friend of your mother out and enjoymotherly power, cook her favourite meal for your family, enjoy a meal in a restaurant she enjoyed, connect with something she valued including participating in a charity that she participated in.

Plant her favourite plants, wear something that belongs to her or write her a love letter. Whatever you do celebrate mum for she sacrificed so much for you.
