Contrary to what most people think, it’s not a good idea to confine sex to the fertile period in the middle of the month when a woman ovulates.

True, an egg is sitting there, waiting to be fertilised by sperm. But predicting ovulation can be dodgy if a woman has irregular cycles.

It turns out that couples need to have more rather than less sex so that there’s sperm available when the egg drops.

Busy, stressful modern lives often make the “sex three times a week” strategy difficult to achieve – but that’s the recipe for success according to fertility expert Dr Geetha Venkat.

With people working longer hours and worrying about their finances, it means many are just too tired to have regular sex. It just isn’t high enough on their priority list.

Then there are other couples where one of the pair travels so it’s difficult for them to have sex often. But many couples aren’t aware that they should have sex often to increase their chances of conceiving.

Around 84% of couples will conceive naturally within one year if they have regular unprotected sex. Around 92% will conceive within two years and 93% will become pregnant within three.

The average amount of time it takes fertile couples to get pregnant is six months.

The fast-moving, usually male sperm, enter the womb and travel into the Fallopian tube – a journey that takes about a day.

After ovulation, the egg travels up the Fallopian tube and meets the sperm coming down. This happens a third of the way along the tube.

The egg is fertilised and an embryo is created.

Ideally, couples should have sex up to four times a week and also plan to have sex one day before her ovulation window, during the ovulation period and then one day afterwards too.

Sperm can survive for 48 to 72 hours in the womb. And the more sex a man has, the better quality sperm he will have too.

Having sex regularly can flush out the old sperm which may be abnormal.

This also improves sperm quality, ensuring only the best sperm will reach the egg and fertilise it to make a baby.
