Should I give my boyfriend my virginity to make him stay?

Dear Coleen

My boyfriend and I are in a long-distance relationship after dating for a year. We can’t move closer because we’re still young and it’s not our decision.

He seems confused because he says he loves me, yet he just wants to be best friends or friends with benefits.

But if he’s going to treat me the same as when we dated, then why break up?

I’m in love with him, so I feel very hurt. I’ve thought about giving him my virginity as a gift when we do meet. What should we do?

Coleen says

Don’t even think about doing that at this point.

It sounds to me that now you’re living far apart, he wants to have his cake and eat it, too.

If you love someone, you don’t just want to be friends with benefits.

And also, if you’re still a virgin, it would be sad if your first time was about persuading someone to stay with you.

He’s not worth it. Most of us don’t end up with the person we lose our virginity to but it should be a lovely, special thing at the time where there’s mutual love and respect.

To me, this ‘relationship’ sounds like too much hassle – you don’t need to be involved in something this complicated at your age.

Long-distance relationships are hard enough when you’ve had years of dating experience.
