A Mommy Story: I had a miracle baby

Parenting

What one thing never fails to make you feel better?

It was during the December holidays on 2013 when we had finally closed campus and was happy to have a break from school and so excited about the vacation that was planned months ago. As a freshman in the United States international university, this was a relief for me as I knew I really had to utilize my holiday.

Laying there on the sandy beaches of mtwapa with my mum and aunts, the cool breeze gently washed over our sun burnt faces and I felt a sharp pain through my tummy. I couldn’t explain it and was taken to Agakhan hospital in Mombasa the following day and given some ulcers medication. The pain kept on recurring during our stay at the coastal land and when we came back to Nairobi my dad insisted on me going for a thorough checkup.

Upon reaching Nairobi hospital, I was attended to by my gynecologist who broke the news to me that I am 15 weeks and 2 days pregnant. This was very shocking to me as a few months ago I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hence told that I was infertile. I didn’t know what to feel as my head immediately started to spin very fast.

I went to the parking lot by the green grass and laid there for two good hours with no idea of what I should feel who I should call or what is should do. I then called my high school friend who advised me to tell my then boyfriend who we had just broken up a month ago. I gathered my guts and called my boyfriend’s best friend who was happy with the news. He informed my boyfriend and set up a meeting.

We met on a Friday evening in town and He told me that he wasn’t ready for any responsibilities and that’s when I thought my world had come to an end and all my dreams shuttered. I was stressed, disappointed, angry and loss of all hope. My best friend came over to my place the following day and as we were chatting I started bleeding. I thought I was having a miscarriage and they rushed me to Mater hospital TRM as it was it was the closest hospital since I was living in the hostels.

A scan was done and it was confirmed that the baby was doing okay and very healthy and that the bleeding was due to my high stress levels. I was warned about getting so angry as this will affect the baby. That evening is when I decided to talk to my mum and tell her everything. To my amazement, my mum had already suspected my pregnancy but did not utter a word about it. Now came the hard part of telling my dad which I kept on procrastinating since he is one man you wouldn’t want to mess up with. My elder sister who was travelling to Australia gave me the courage to talk to my dad and once I got back to the hostel that weekend, I texted my dad and told him that I was expectant. He neither replied anything and went silent on me for 9 months.

This was a really heartbreaking moment for me as I did not know what to do, some friends advise me to terminate the baby since the father of the baby had refused to take full responsibility while others advised me to keep the baby. I was really confused, angry and I knew this would cause harm to my unborn baby, I would cry myself to sleep every single night as I knew this is the end of me but the more I cried each day is the more I prayed to God for strength. I finally decided to enroll for counseling services that helped me overcome my depression.

I later on sued my baby daddy for child support a year later and now he doesn’t pay up according to the court agreement and he has just paid bride price to another lady earlier this April. I pray to god each day to keep my baby healthy and strong and through his grace she is a very jovial and happy baby, full of life and laughter.

To this day I thank god for giving me a precious gem that calls me mum and this encourages me to work hard to provide her with the best things in life. I would like my story to be an inspiration to all the young teenage girls out there to never give up on life just because they got pregnant but turn their problem to a stepping stone and avoid abortion.
