Covid-19: Kenya records 277 new cases in last 24 hours

Kenya on Sunday, July 4 recorded 277 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 3,796 raising the country's caseload to 185,868.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 7.3 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 1,981,951.

Out of the new patients, 158 are male, whereas 119 are female, with the youngest carrier aged 10 months, and the oldest aged 95.

Of the new cases, five are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution, Nairobi recorded 64, Mombasa 31, Nandi 27, Siaya 22, Nakuru 21, Busia 17, Uasin Gishu 16, Homa Bay 10, Kericho 9, Kisumu 9, Bungoma 7, Narok 7, Embu 6, Kilifi 5, Migori 5, Kakamega 4, Lamu 4, Kiambu 4, Meru 2, Bomet 2, Taita Taveta 2, Kisii 1, Kitui 1 and Murang’a 1.

In terms of sub-county distribution, the 64 cases in Nairobi are from Kamukunji (9), Langata and Westlands (6) cases each, Dagoretti North, Embakasi West, Makadara and Mathare (5) cases each, Embakasi Central and Starehe (4) cases each, Dagoretti South, Embakasi East and Embakasi North (3) cases each, Kibra and Roysambu (2) cases each, Embakasi South and Ruaraka (1) each.

In Mombasa, the 31 cases are from Mvita (20), Nyali (5), Changamwe (3), Kisauni (2) and Jomvu (1).

In Nandi County, the 27 cases are from Emgwen (23) Aldai and Nandi Hills (2) cases each.

In Siaya County, the 22 cases are from Alego-Usonga (11), Gem (6), Bondo (4) and Ugunja (1).

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 3,675 after four more people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

The total recoveries so far stand at 127,625 after 669 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 588 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 81 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 92,289 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 35,336 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,226 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 5,834 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and fifteen (115) patients are in the ICU, 34 of whom are on ventilatory support and 50 on supplemental oxygen. Thirty-one (31) patients are on observation.

Another 166 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 151 of them in general wards and 15 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has by July 4, 2021, administered 1,473,869 vaccines across the country. Of these, the total first doses are 1,017,485 while the second doses are 456,384.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 141,730, Others 127,001, Health Workers 90,628, Teachers 62,205 while Security Officers are at 34,820.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 44.9 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 1.76 per cent.
